Job Description: “I help individuals, nonprofit organizations, charitable foundations, and small businesses reach and connect with their target audience through events, sponsorships, direct media outreach, and content marketing. My goal is to increase their ability to spread their message and increase the quality of their supporters. As someone who is self-employed, no two days are the same! One day I could be working on internal marketing and communications strategies for my own business and the next day I am working on unique strategies for my clients.” When it comes to clients, Jumi is typically:
Looking for ways to market their content
Connecting with journalists, bloggers, and event organizers
Analyzing data to help inform ongoing strategy
Pitching their stories
Planning and managing the logistics of upcoming events
Education Level
B.S. in Kinesiology, University of Maryland College Park
Masters of Health Administration, George Washington University
Other Requirements
"As you can see from my education level, I do not have a formal marketing or communications degree. I did however take a number of courses in those areas to get an understanding about the basic principles of communications and public relations. I also have work experience where I worked side by side with Communication’s Directors leading respective projects.”
Professional Development
"Outside of academics to grow professionally, the important thing when it comes to being self-employed in communications is to make sure you’re always learning. Tune into webinars, seminars, take certifications, join industry groups, and don’t stop there - actually implement all that you are learning when you’re given a project. Another thing is to get involved in causes you’re passionate about. One of the things I do is volunteer with an organization in Los Angeles focused on youth and community development. So, it’s key to be balanced - work, play, and volunteer! Don’t be afraid to use your skills in a way that benefits others, even if you have to do it for free. Trust me, what you put into the world, you’ll definitely get out.”
Pros/Cons
"I love building relationships and serving as a resource to people! I love being able to take someone’s vision and communicate that to their target audience and receive positive responses in return. Because I’m self-employed though, the most difficult part is spending so much time alone and not having colleagues to bounce ideas off of on a regular basis.”
Advice
"Don’t worry about not having “the right” degree. If you’re passionate about a career in communications, learn all you can and just go for it! Be intentional about the projects you work on (whether paid or unpaid) and continuously build upon that.”
